When Should You Do a Professional Intervention?

At anytime during the process of getting a drug addict to treatment you can do an intervention. Honestly, I have seen so much time and thousands of dollars wasted and more importantly, death, due to delayed interventions, that at this point, I say just cut to the chase and do an intervention.

I know it can be confusing to the family. Why should you do an intervention if the addict is not willing to go to treatment? If you cannot convince him, who will?

I gave my usual answer, “They couldn’t make tobacco illegal if they wanted to. We don’t have enough police or a big enough army to enforce a law like that.” She and about thirty other faces kept looking at me; it was obvious, to them anyway, that wasn’t a satisfactory answer.

I said, “They tried to make alcohol illegal, back in the 1920s, and it didn’t work.”

You Are An Individual. You Are Not Your Father or Your Uncles.

A kid asked me in school today if he was going to become addicted to alcohol. I was a bit shaken by this question. I was in a very affluent area of South Pasadena and saw unusually few signs of drug abuse in the class. (Unusually few for a California public high school, anyway.)

I asked if he thought he was going have a drinking problem & he said yes, his father and uncles are heavy drinkers and his grandfather died of alcoholism.

It was pretty clear that the entire class was waiting for an answer and I wanted to not screw this one up.

Don’t forget, when a drug abuser gives up drugs, he or she is giving up something very dear.

There are reasons they kept using, even in the face of all the opposition. Drugs and the whole drug culture are what their lives have been revolving around for years. the sensations, the laughter and the friendships that were revolving around the drug use, all these things must be given up to sustain sobriety.

Many addicts find a replacement extended family in group meetings. Others join churches and have the support and help there. This is a very important element in recovery. When drugs a all that goes with them is suddenly removed, the addict is a left with a considerable void.
