Methadone is the generic name for an analgesic and can reduce pain for persons with injuries or following surgeries.
Methadone has pharmacological properties similar to morphine and heroin, including habituation and addiction and is sometimes substituted for heroin, morphine or other opioid drugs during drug addiction treatment.
Used in some addiction treatment centers, methadone can be substituted for heroin, morphine and other opiate drugs due to a cross-tolerance, meaning that the symptoms incident to withdrawal from opiates can be reduced by using methadone.

These are a few of the comments students wrote after a lecture in a California Continuation High School on Jan 26, 2010 in response to the question, “Did your thoughts about drugs change after hearing this talk?”:
When one of your friends thing they can solve their problems by doing drugs, this talk will make them see that their problems will only get worse. 9th Grade
My thoughts about drugs changed because I thought it was cool when my friends would drugs and now I know it’s not cool. 9th Grade
Yes, now I am a lot less willing to ever risk taking drugs. I now know the dangers of not just addiction , but the damage taking one drug can cause. 10th Grade
My thoughts changed (after this talk). I’ve never taken drugs but all my friends have. So, I have always wanted to try weed just once. But I don’t want anything in myself to go wrong. I think it’s necessary to lead a drug-free life. 9th Grade
Before this talk I was unsure if I should try drugs to see why people like them so much, but now I’m more than sure that I won’t try any of the drugs that people talk so much about. 10th Grade
My thoughts of drugs changed entirely. Because on T.V. there would be people doin drugs as if it was normal, but now I’m even more sure of myself that I will never take any drugs. 9th Grade

“My thoughts changed a lot. I was thinking of using weed because I thought it did nothing to you. But now that I know what it does, I’m definitely not anymore!”
“Yes, of course, because very few friends tell you the truth about drugs and how your body changes and gets affected.”
“My thoughts did change. Some of the stuff we talked about I thought wasn’t that serious, now I know it is. That made me not want to try them anymore.”
