Drug Relapse and Dishonesty. What is the Connection?

When relapse to drugs or alcohol addiction is imminent, there are indications, signs that can be seen and the slip can be predicted. One the reliable signs of a coming relapse is dishonesty.

Is the recovering addict exhibiting any of the following indicators?

• Lying about whereabouts

• Missing money

• Not showing up at agreed upon meetings or social functions

• “Little white lies”, that are unnecessary, where the truth would serve just as well

• Accusations of, “you don’t trust me!”

These are not the only danger signs, but you get the idea.

Any hint of the ex-user not sticking to his plan or distancing him or herself from the family or program, while not a 100% sure clue that they’re back off the wagon, means that the ship is off course and heading for the rocks.

You can choose to sit and wait until you have a full relapse episode on your hands, which is a very dangerous thing to do, or you can jump right to it and find out what is going astray in this person’s drug-free game plan and possibly head off what could be a deadly mistake.

If you ARE the addict who is experiencing this, realize, now is the time to talk to your sponsor, your counselor or soul-mate. Don’t wait, get their help right now. Your addiction once had you by the tenders, do you think it can’t get you again?!
