Can’t Get Off Drugs? Here Is Why

Three basic things must occur for you to get off and stay off drugs. Each one is essential to your successfully staying clean living a drug-free life.

First, if you are blaming yourself for starting to use drugs, for being unable or unwilling to stop using drugs and for relapsing every time you quit, you are both right and wrong.

It is your fault, but it is not a matter of blame.

Blame is a waste of time and energy. If you blame yourself, what does that accomplish? Nothing. It makes you feel like an idiot and, really, you didn’t try to make yourself into an addicted person.

2. Does the Addict Have to Hit Bottom?

We’ve all heard the old line, “A person has to hit the bottom before he’ll realize he needs to quit drugs.”  This is one of those sayings that have just barely enough truth in them to literally kill someone.

We are talking here about drug addiction, a potentially lethal activity that is practically defined by poor and dangerous choices. To “hit bottom” can be a deadly or nearly deadly event. You may as well teach a child to stay out of traffic by letting him be hit by a truck.

Drug Relapse and Dishonesty. What is the Connection?

When relapse to drugs or alcohol addiction is imminent, there are indications, signs that can be seen and the slip can be predicted. One the reliable signs of a coming relapse is dishonesty.

Is the recovering addict exhibiting any of the following indicators?

• Lying about whereabouts

• Missing money

• Not showing up at agreed upon meetings or social functions

• “Little white lies”, that are unnecessary, where the truth would serve just as well

• Accusations of, “you don’t trust me!”

These are not the only danger signs, but you get the idea.
