Hello everybody, sorry about the sporadic posts, I have received some emails asking what’s up. I have been busy launching a couple of new projects, one on the net and one in the classrooms. But I should be able to catch up here soon!
During a lecture in a library last week, a teacher asked a question:
“Tony, what are the chances of anybody completely overcoming drug addiction, really?”
Before I answered him I asked if he ever knew someone who was successful at overcoming addiction to drugs and he said, “You are the only one.” The students just stared at him.

No, but it CAN be the beginning of the end.
I have seen many, many people go through drug rehab treatment since I went through it myself in 1976. I’ve helped many of them to quit drugs and go on to live full lives without the anchor of drug dependence around their necks. I have also seen some fail and slip right back into the mud of drug addiction.
The reasons why some succeed and some fail are many, but nearly all of these addicts wanted to stop using. So what happened to those who didn’t make it?
It started with drug relapse.

Don’t think that quitting drugs is going to solve all the addict’s problems.
What the addict did while on drugs wasn’t exactly creating a good future. Once the drugs are removed, the work of rebuilding a life has to begin.
When an addict tries to quit but then relapses to drugs, it occurs because he or she didn’t change anything. We’re not talking about just a change of location or of friends. The addict must change abilities.

Factors which MUST be addressed to Overcome Drug Addiction:
1. First and foremost, drug use must cease.
This seems so obvious that it need not be mentioned. This might require medical help during the initial withdrawal, but usually can be accomplished comfortably and without using dangerous drugs.

To help a drug addict, any addiction counselor can tell you, the first hurdle is to get the addict’s agreement to receive help. No amounts of advice or friendly mannerisms are going to make a difference if there is no willingness to quit drugs.
This can be difficult; it often is, but definitely not hopeless. This is called intervention and can be the most difficult part of their recovery from addiction. The good news is this, there are things you can do or say to bring them to the realization that help is needed. Here are some very important points to keep in mind:
