At some point along his life the drug addict lost his most valuable possession, that one thing he or she cannot live without: his self-respect.
His self-respect, his ability to love and trust himself has diminished to such a degree that he is now doing things he swore to himself he would NEVER do: shooting up with needles, stealing from family and friends, selling drugs, selling sex, and so on.

There is a rash of new “Drug Detox Centers” showing up all over the country. They usually promote their services by promising detoxification while you sleep, or, painless detox, or, “Three Day Detox!”
Okay, I understand someone wanting to avoid the pain of withdrawal from powerful drugs. There is a reason why addicts go to such great lengths to escape the agony of withdrawal symptoms. I’ve been there. But we need to put a name on what is being accomplished.

There are facilities all over the world that exist to help people over come addiction to drugs and alcohol. All of them are successful SOME of the time. None of them are successful ALL of the time.
The questions you should ask are these:
- What is the success rate of this particular center?
- Will I emerge from this treatment drug-free?
- Can the problems that led to drug addiction in the first place be dealt with there?
- Will the stay there be long enough to give the strength needed to resist relapsing to drugs?

This is a growing resource for people who work in the Drug Detox and Rehab industry and for people who are facing a substance abuse problem in themselves or a loved one. There will also be an area for those who are in recovery from substance
abuse and addiction and want to share their insights and experiences.
While it may not be real to expect that a former abuser can ever become totally free of all the effects of having been addicted, to say that addiction is completely incurable or “once an addict, always an addict” is not only easily proved false, but it ignores the thousands of FORMER addicts walking around in society today.
I am one of those former addicts…sober for 34 years-and loving it.
