The day that you wake up, where ever you ended up the night before, and know for sure that you have a drug or alcohol problem that cannot be ignored any more, and when you have finally reached a point at which you say, “Wow, I am addicted” There are some choices to make.
Choosing the right path will make the difference between successful recovery and failure, so your actions at this point are critical to your future.

There are facilities all over the world that exist to help people over come addiction to drugs and alcohol. All of them are successful SOME of the time. None of them are successful ALL of the time.
The questions you should ask are these:
- What is the success rate of this particular center?
- Will I emerge from this treatment drug-free?
- Can the problems that led to drug addiction in the first place be dealt with there?
- Will the stay there be long enough to give the strength needed to resist relapsing to drugs?

If you have an addict in the family, you are certainly aware that bringing up the subject of dealing with the addiction is like playing with fireworks in a burning house. They blow up more often than not.
What is the real cause of this? On the surface it looks like they are “just touchy” on the subject. But saying they are just touchy doesn’t lead to a solution. Why are they so sensitive? How can you get around the booby-traps in the conversation and have a real, to-the-point discussion of the problem?

I spoke to a kid this week at the request of his mother. He was a great looking boy and seemed alert and was definitely willing to speak to me.
His mother told me that he was out of control and had been busted at his school for possession of eight ecstasy pills. This was a kid on ecstasy.
If I hadn’t dealt with so many addicts, I would have had a hard time believing that this was an addicted teen. He had turned 15 years old the week-end before I arrived, and was alert and willing to talk to me.
