Drug Education in a College Fraternity

College Lecture HallA man just left my office with a plan to speak to students in chapters of his old fraternity around the nation regarding the drug problems being found in the various chapters.

He had come to me for suggestions on how to approach the administration in the fraternities home office so they would support his efforts with at least travel expenses, he is willing to do work for free, but can’t run all over the US without at least expense money.

The Addict’s Most Valuable Possession

At some point along his life the drug addict lost his most valuable possession, that one thing he or she cannot live without: his self-respect.

His self-respect, his ability to love and trust himself has diminished to such a degree that he is now doing things he swore to himself he would NEVER do: shooting up with needles, stealing from family and friends, selling drugs, selling sex, and so on.

Don’t forget, when a drug abuser gives up drugs, he or she is giving up something very dear.

There are reasons they kept using, even in the face of all the opposition. Drugs and the whole drug culture are what their lives have been revolving around for years. the sensations, the laughter and the friendships that were revolving around the drug use, all these things must be given up to sustain sobriety.

Many addicts find a replacement extended family in group meetings. Others join churches and have the support and help there. This is a very important element in recovery. When drugs a all that goes with them is suddenly removed, the addict is a left with a considerable void.

Had a Great Time in School Today!

This was really a terrific day for drug education and drug abuse prevention.  At least it was in the little Catholic school I visited this morning in downtown Los Angeles. I have been to this parochial school every year, at least once since 2003 and I have been able to watch the students as they grow older. Read more of this article »

2. Does the Addict Have to Hit Bottom?

We’ve all heard the old line, “A person has to hit the bottom before he’ll realize he needs to quit drugs.”  This is one of those sayings that have just barely enough truth in them to literally kill someone.

We are talking here about drug addiction, a potentially lethal activity that is practically defined by poor and dangerous choices. To “hit bottom” can be a deadly or nearly deadly event. You may as well teach a child to stay out of traffic by letting him be hit by a truck.
