Hello everybody, sorry about the sporadic posts, I have received some emails asking what’s up. I have been busy launching a couple of new projects, one on the net and one in the classrooms. But I should be able to catch up here soon!
During a lecture in a library last week, a teacher asked a question:
“Tony, what are the chances of anybody completely overcoming drug addiction, really?”
Before I answered him I asked if he ever knew someone who was successful at overcoming addiction to drugs and he said, “You are the only one.” The students just stared at him.

What is the difference between an addicted individual and one who has stopped their drug taking? If we examine this, we can learn something useful about drug addiction.
Let’s stand them together. Someone who has ceased consuming dangerous and addictive drugs stands right next to a fully strung-out, stoned, blurry eyed drug addict. We should try to pick out the differences, the user from the ex-user.

Don’t forget, when a drug abuser gives up drugs, he or she is giving up something very dear.
There are reasons they kept using, even in the face of all the opposition. Drugs and the whole drug culture are what their lives have been revolving around for years. the sensations, the laughter and the friendships that were revolving around the drug use, all these things must be given up to sustain sobriety.
Many addicts find a replacement extended family in group meetings. Others join churches and have the support and help there. This is a very important element in recovery. When drugs a all that goes with them is suddenly removed, the addict is a left with a considerable void.

To transform a drug addict into a productive and stably drug-free person is quite an accomplishment. There are some necessary changes that must be made, by the addict, before that goal can be reached
Factors which MUST be addressed:
1. First and foremost, drug use must cease.
This seems so obvious that it needn’t be mentioned. This might require medical help during the initial withdrawal, but usually can be accomplished comfortably and without using dangerous drugs.
2. Poisonous drugs and drug residues MUST be removed from the body.
This is called detox. But the word detox has wrongly come to mean just staying off drugs for a short period. That does not rid the body of all the toxins built up over years of drug abuse. Don’t settle for anything less that complete cleansing of the body.

When relapse to drugs or alcohol addiction is imminent, there are indications, signs that can be seen and the slip can be predicted. One the reliable signs of a coming relapse is dishonesty.
Is the recovering addict exhibiting any of the following indicators?
• Lying about whereabouts
• Missing money
• Not showing up at agreed upon meetings or social functions
• “Little white lies”, that are unnecessary, where the truth would serve just as well
• Accusations of, “you don’t trust me!”
These are not the only danger signs, but you get the idea.
