To help a drug addict, any addiction counselor can tell you, the first hurdle is to get the addict’s agreement to receive help. No amounts of advice or friendly mannerisms are going to make a difference if there is no willingness to quit drugs.
This can be difficult; it often is, but definitely not hopeless. This is called intervention and can be the most difficult part of their recovery from addiction. Addiction to drugs or alcohol is not an on—off switch. There is not really a point at which you can say, “Wow, yesterday I was just a drug abuser, but today I am a drug addict.”
Most of the drug abusers do not become addicted. They abuse drugs for a certain period and then just sort of graduate out of it; or they become interested in life and realize that drug use is getting in the way of their goals and simply stop.

They need your help, now, desperately.
An addicted person is not thinking clearly, it is obvious. When it comes to his or her addiction, they are making destructive decisions and doing stupid things.
Good choices and responsible actions are required to avoid worsening of the situation and deadly accidents. The user is not able to make those choices right now.
While you can never force someone into getting better, an expert interventionist can show the addict where he or she is headed and make it real to them that misery and possibly death lie down the path they are on.
They might come around some day and decide to quit and enter a detox rehab program on their own, but if you wait that long, it may be too late. Remember, the drug addict’s thinking is deadened, at least on the subject of his or her addiction. They cannot make valid or even logical decisions where their addictions are concerned. If they could, they wouldn’t be addicted!
