What keeps drug addicted people from seeking help? They have their REASONS.

I have spoken to so many people who need drug addiction treatment that I should be able to answer this question right off the top of my head.

But, while I have seen many hundreds of addicts coming in and receiving help, I have also seen and spoken to many thousands of others who needed to come to detox rehab but didn’t. The reasons they gave for not admitting themselves were so many and so varied that it is nearly impossible to nail one down as the most common, or the most valid.

Look at it logically. The addict has a problem that, if not handled, will most likely claim his or her life. Even if death does not come soon, the life they have is usually all about drugs or alcohol and after a while is not much worth living.

So any excuse or justification they give for continuing their addiction is not just illogical, it is crazy and self destructive. So trying to reason out all the crazy excuses, the only real answer is to get the person into an effective, drug-free treatment center now. The excuses and reasons will show themselves to be invalid soon after recovery begins.

Wow. I do understand since I had a very good friend who was terribly addicted. She finally did something about it but up to that point her life was miserable. Everything went wrong… Relationships didn’t work and ended ugly. Money was always hard to come by. Jobs were hard to keep. Life was a complete drudgery plus she was constantly worried what doctor might give her the drugs she needed. Then everything changed when she finally decided to stop being an addict. As of today, she has not taken any drugs for over 15 years and life is good. And yes, that good friend is me :-) Try being a friend to yourself, and you will see that it’s the right thing to do — get off the drugs!
